On most Gilbert properties, pest activity has more to do with the lot and the landscaping than with housekeeping. Gilbert grew up around irrigation canals, and its lawns, drip-irrigated beds and community lakes keep the ground damp for much of the year. A typical yard here also has a block wall, granite landscape rock and a citrus or palm tree or two. Each of those features gives pests shelter, water or both. Gaps in block walls and under landscape rock offer cover from the afternoon heat, while irrigated beds keep patches of soil damp all summer and draw crickets and roaches. Scorpions and spiders follow the insects they feed on.
The location of the house matters as well. Homes that back onto open desert, a wash or preserve land tend to see more bark scorpions and pack rats. Grading for new neighborhoods, as in south Gilbert, Queen Creek and San Tan Valley, can also push scorpions and rodents toward the finished houses. Mature citrus and untrimmed palm trees draw roof rats, which feed on the fruit and nest in the dead fronds.
Activity climbs as nights warm up in spring and stays high through the summer. Monsoon storms, which usually run from July into September, flood burrows and drains and push roaches and scorpions toward houses. Winters are mild enough that some activity continues all year, so most homes here do better with regular exterior service than with a single spray. Treatment depends on the species, so identification comes first. A German cockroach infestation in a kitchen, for example, is handled very differently from American cockroaches coming up from a sewer line.
